Carrier Sekani Tribal Council and Northern BC Mayors Call for Immediate Increased Support

Carrier Sekani Tribal Council and Northern BC Mayors Call for Immediate Increased Support Towards Wildfires Threatening Northern Rural and Indigenous Communities.

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, August 13, 2018

Dakelh Territory, Prince George:  The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council (CSTC) and the Northern B.C. Mayors are calling for immediate increased support from the provincial and federal governments in response to the struggle against wildfires threatening northern rural and indigenous communities. The northwest region of the province now has some of the largest fires in the province.

The priority action needed immediately is a Wildfire Command Centre established in the northwest of the province. With no rain in the immediate forecast and temperatures rising again many people fear that these large fires will get even more aggressive and increasingly threaten structures and livestock/wildlife.

So far the province has been slow to declare a provincial state of emergency, however, many northern communities have recently been placed on evacuation alerts as wildfires rapidly increase in size and ferocity. The situation is becoming increasingly desperate and reports of stressed and inadequate resources are being brought forward.

“While we recognize that other regions of the province are under threat, we are asking Premier Horgan to respond to the northern situation and immediately utilize any resources that are standing by.” states Deputy Tribal Chief Reg Mueller.
