Carrier Sekani Tribal Council Urges Members of the Public Who Witnessed the Arrest of a Man in a Local Parking Lot on Tuesday July 18 to Come Forward
The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council (CSTC) urges anyone who witnessed the confrontation and ensuing arrest between a man and a police officer that began in a parking lot (near the intersection of Central St. West and 10th Ave – Burger King) on Tuesday July 18th at around 10:30 PM to please come forward. B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is investigating the death of the man who was apprehended during this incident and is seeking witnesses and smartphone footage.
During the confrontation the police officer used pepper spray to subdue the man and arrested him. He was then placed in the back of the police car. When the apprehended man began to appear to have trouble breathing the police called for medical assistance and he later died in hospital.
It is believed that a large number of people witnessed the incident and some may have even captured it on their mobile phones. Several occupied vehicles were in the parking lot at the time.
The IIO is a civilian led agency that investigates incidents involving the police that result in serious harm or death.
