Wildfire Update August 15, 2018

Shovel Lake Wildfire (R11498) This fire is impacting Stellat’en First Nation, Nadleh Whut’en and Nak’azdli Whut’en.
Location: 6.7 km north of Endako
Status: 50,831 hectares estimated
Cause: under investigation
Resources: 118 firefighters and 47 pieces of heavy equipment.

Objectives: Today on the west flank crews will be conducting a planned ignition from the intersection of the Owl Lake Road and Bomberger along a guard that is being completed to Stern Lake on the north side of Tatin Lake.
Status: The Shovel Lake fire pushed approximately 5-7 kilometres on the east flank. The Cunningham FSR has not been breached and Hwy 27 is still open at this time. Structural Protection is being conducted in the community of Fort St. James and in the Nadleh Whut’en community.
On the southeast flank the fire burned down to the png pipeline to the north of Fraser Lake.
Evacuations: An Evacuation Order and Alert remains in effect for this wildfire by the Bulkley Nechako Regional District. For more information visit: https://www.rdbn.bc.ca/
BC Wildfire Service continues to implement an Area Order Restriction to protect public safety due to the wildfire’s rate of spread and to avoid interference with fire suppression efforts. The area restriction will remain in place until noon on Sept. 15, 2018, or until the order is rescinded. The area restriction order applies to all Crown land outlined on the map (including recreational campgrounds) that is available online at: http://ow.ly/X8Mr30lbPR9

Wildfire Update August 14 (evening) 2018

Shovel Lake (R11498), part of the Babine Complex, Northwest Fire Centre.
This fire is impacting CSTC communities Stellat’en First Nation and Nadleh Whut’en.
Location: 6.7 km north of Endako
Status: 50, 831 ha.

Current Activity: The Shovel Lake wildfire did not experience the same activity and growth as yesterday, however, there was some fire activity again on the east side. The fire is split up into North and South divisions. The North division worked to secure the Hannay Road and the png pipeline on the west flank of the fire. They have a secured line at this point. Crews also worked to tie in Tatin Lake northwest to Owl Lake. There are unburned pockets of fuel on the fire side of this guard that will be hand ignited tomorrow if conditions allow. In the South Division the fire did get onto the south side of Stern Lake. Crews built guard on the south side of the fire activity and were successful in guarding this excursion. The big picture plan for the South division is to build a guard from Stern Lake east all the way across the north of Fraser Lake. Equipment will also build guard following a png pipeline that runs along the north shore of Fraser lake. This will act as a secondary guard for the properties on the north shore.

Carrier Sekani Tribal Council and Northern BC Mayors Call for Immediate Increased Support

Carrier Sekani Tribal Council and Northern BC Mayors Call for Immediate Increased Support Towards Wildfires Threatening Northern Rural and Indigenous Communities.

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, August 13, 2018

Dakelh Territory, Prince George:  The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council (CSTC) and the Northern B.C. Mayors are calling for immediate increased support from the provincial and federal governments in response to the struggle against wildfires threatening northern rural and indigenous communities. The northwest region of the province now has some of the largest fires in the province.

The priority action needed immediately is a Wildfire Command Centre established in the northwest of the province. With no rain in the immediate forecast and temperatures rising again many people fear that these large fires will get even more aggressive and increasingly threaten structures and livestock/wildlife.

So far the province has been slow to declare a provincial state of emergency, however, many northern communities have recently been placed on evacuation alerts as wildfires rapidly increase in size and ferocity. The situation is becoming increasingly desperate and reports of stressed and inadequate resources are being brought forward.

“While we recognize that other regions of the province are under threat, we are asking Premier Horgan to respond to the northern situation and immediately utilize any resources that are standing by.” states Deputy Tribal Chief Reg Mueller.

Watershed Talk Newsletter 2018 Fraser Salmon Update V15, no.4

Current in-season information is looking good for Fraser sockeye, the in-season information to date shows trends at or above p50 for Early Summers, while Early Stuarts have exceeded the p50 forecast. The test fishery program has ramped up their effort as most test fisheries have started, including the seines. It was noted that the seine test fishery do not seem to be showing similar abundances as the gillnet test fisheries. This is not unexpected, as there are a number of differences in catchability in the seines compared to gillnets at the current abundance of sockeye, and operational challenges for the seiners to put out full effort (mechanical issues, etc.). We will be watching the differences in catch closely over the next week to see if it is a real difference in CPUE or simply an implementation issue.
