Dakelh Territory, Prince George: Tribal Chief Terry Teegee and Carrier Sekani Tribal Council Chiefs are deeply saddened with the passing of Arthur Manuel on Wednesday at the age of 65.
“We would like to convey our prayers and condolences to his family, friends, community and all those who knew and respected him.” Stated Tribal Chief Terry Teegee. Arthur Manuel was an outspoken leader and a warrior who passionately defended Indigenous land and rights in British Columbia, across Canada and around the world. He was a former chief of the Neskonlith First Nation in British Columbia, Chair of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council and is a co-author for the book Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-up Call (2016). Most recently, he was fiercely vocal about his opposition to the Trans Mountain Pipeline, a $6.8 billion project which has received approval from the federal government.
Arthur’s voice and work profoundly influenced the political and social struggle for justice for Indigenous peoples, and will echo into the future for generations to come. Tribal Chief Terry Teegee and many Chiefs from across the country will be attending services for Arthur Manuel at 10 am Sunday.
